Create a merchant account

A merchant account is the business identity customers pay: it carries your business's display name, and every payment it takes settles into the business wallet behind it. The business wallet holds the money; the merchant account is the counter customers meet.

What you set up

1. Have an active business wallet ready — the merchant account requires one for settlement and will not accept a personal wallet. If you do not have one yet, create it first.
2. Choose the settlement wallet. This is where captured payments land. One business wallet backs one merchant account, so a wallet already settling for another merchant account cannot be chosen again.
3. Give the business its display name — the name customers see when they pay you. You can also record a legal name if your business has one distinct from the everyday name.
4. Confirm, and the merchant account is created with you as its owner.

People and roles

A merchant account is built for more hands than one. It supports members with distinct roles — an owner, admins, cashiers who take payments, refund managers, and viewers who can see without touching. That structure matters even for a small shop: the person at the counter on Saturday does not need the authority to change the business, and with roles they do not have it. Each member acts from their own Kit Pay account, so the record shows who did what.

What happens after

From a working merchant account you can issue signed QR codes for the counter, take payments and settle them, split if you need to, and read everything back in your business records. A merchant account also has a status — active is the working state, and an account can be suspended or closed — so if something looks wrong, start with troubleshooting.
