Business wallets, explained
What a Kit Pay business wallet is, how it differs from your personal wallet, and why merchant tools are built on top of it.
A business wallet is a wallet in your Kit Pay account that exists for your business: its own balance in shillings, its own history, its own name in your app. It is not a different app and not a different login — it is a second wallet, kept deliberately apart from your personal money. Personal and business wallets covers the separation itself; this article covers why the business side works the way it does.
What makes it a business wallet
- It is created as a business wallet from the start — the type belongs to the wallet, not to how you happen to use it.
- It keeps its own complete history, so business money never has to be untangled from school fees and groceries.
- It is the foundation for merchant tools: a merchant account settles into an active business wallet, and only a business wallet qualifies.
- The same money rules apply as everywhere on Kit Pay: sensitive actions require approval tied to what you are doing, using your wallet PIN or supported device security.
Why merchant tools insist on it
When you set up a merchant account, Kit Pay requires an active business wallet for settlement — the system refuses to settle shop takings into a personal wallet. That strictness is a favour. It means the money customers pay you lands in a place built for the business: countable, separable, and readable at tax time. Keeping simple business records shows what that separation is worth over a year.
One business wallet backs one merchant account. If a wallet is already settling for a merchant account, it cannot be attached to a second one — each business gets its own unambiguous home for its money.
Getting one
You create a business wallet from inside the app, alongside the personal wallet you already have. There is no paperwork stage for the wallet itself — the wallet is the container. The merchant account that sits on top of it, with your business's public name, is the next step: create a merchant account.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a registered company to have a business wallet?
The wallet itself is created in the app. Whether your business should be formally registered is a separate question about your business — registration basics is an honest place to start.
Can money move between my personal and business wallets?
They are both wallets in your account, and movements between wallets are recorded like any other — which is exactly what you want: even paying yourself leaves a clean entry on both sides.
