Understanding your wallet
What a Kit Pay wallet actually is, what lives inside it, and how it differs from a bank account or airtime balance.
Your Kit Pay wallet is where your money lives inside the app: a balance in Ugandan shillings, plus the complete story of how it got that way. Everything else in Kit Pay — transfers, requests, QR payments, plans — is a different way of moving value into or out of this one place.
What the wallet is made of
- A balance: the shillings currently yours to send.
- A history: every movement in or out, recorded at the moment it happened.
- Pending items: requests awaiting a decision and payments set for later, visible before they ever touch the balance.
Under the surface, each movement is a double-entry ledger record — when money leaves one wallet and arrives in another, both sides belong to one recorded transaction. Your balance is not adjusted by hand; it moves through recorded events, each one readable in your history.
How it differs from things it resembles
It is not a bank account: Kit is not a financial institution. Payment services are provided through RukaPay. It is not airtime: airtime is spent with one network for its services, while your wallet balance moves between people. And it is not cash under a mattress: cash has no memory and no approval step, while your wallet has both. Understanding digital wallets explores the idea beyond Kit Pay.
Money in, money out
Today, money arrives in your wallet from other Kit Pay users, and leaves when you send, approve a request, or pay a merchant. Rails connecting the wallet to banks and mobile money are switching on in stages — each announces itself in the app only when it genuinely works for your account. The deposits and withdrawals section tracks these honestly.
One wallet, one owner, one approval rule: sensitive money actions require your approval, tied to the action, using your wallet PIN or supported device security. That is the whole model — everything else is detail.

Can I hold currencies other than shillings?
